Habit of My Heart

© 1998, Steven Gretz

I wonder if you’ll think of me tonight?
Will the fingers of my memory
part the curtain drawn around your heart?
We’ve gone our separate ways, as we always knew we might,
But I wonder...will you think of me tonight?

Tomorrow as you start a brand new day,
Will that longing for a time to share
sneak up and catch you unaware?
As you stare into that mirror, is it my voice you’ll hear say:
“I wonder, if you’ll think of me today”

I know we’ve tried to put the past behind us.
I know we’ve tried to make a brand new start.
I know you have your reasons
--and I have a few myself--
That keep us a thousand miles apart.

But I still feel your smile in my sleep.
And I hear your voice in every song I sing.
Everything I do still reminds me of you,
‘Cause darling, you are the habit of my heart.

I know I never lacked for things to say
I used words to hurt, and words to blind,
and other words just to hide behind.
But I wonder if you knew what those words meant to say
Or did they all just get in the way

I’ve got motions to go through and time to kill.
The bills are paid, the dog’s been fed,
the kids are safely tucked in bed.
There’s an empty place on my shoulder that only you can fill,
And I wonder...if you ever will?

(Chorus)
